The State Counsellor’s Office has chosen Ko Thein Zaw, alias Ko Zaw Zaw, the man of honour for July for his initiative to encourage young people to read books in order to promote an intellectual society.

The office released a congratulatory message signed by State Counsellor DawAung San Suu Kyi herself on Tuesday.

A native of Sithar village in Kyaukpadaung township, Mandalay Region, Ko Thein Zaw completed his primary education, the message said.

As a grilled fish seller in Yangon, he makes arduous efforts to open small libraries with the aim of helping other people develop their creative and intellectual powers. Driven by the passion that “nothing but books can transform Myanmar”, he has now opened five libraries across Yangon, Mandalay and Ayeyawady region. His means of persuading young people to read books is of significant assistance in enabling them to become productive members of society, the State Counsellor’s Office said in its message.
